Check Out This Amazing 100 Word Story

This week some of our class had to do 2 100 word stories about 2 pictures we choose from pobble. I chose to write about The Sky Ladder and The Deep. here is my writing about

Here is my story from ‘The Deep’

He put his head under and saw a humongous figure lurking beneath him; it was moving pretty fast. He soon realised that it was trying to swim away from something; it was being targeted. He looked around, saw nothing so he got pretty nervous. Then it made a sound, blood rushing out of it's stomach; it had just been bitten by something  and his boat was about 150 meters away. He didn't know what to do because he didn’t know what had bitten it so he swam back to the boat as fast as possible to get help for it.

Have you ever had to write a 100 word story before?

This week some of our class had to do 2 100 word stories about 2 pictures we choose from pobble. I chose to write about The Sky Ladder and The Deep. here is my writing about

‘Sky Ladder’.

It wasn't there when he had left the night before but when he had returned in the morning he saw it! A ladder just laying on top of his old shack, he didn't know where it led or where it came from; only one way to find out! Slowly he climbed up the ladder, it creaked whenever he moved an inch. He had nearly reached the top when he heard a loud cracking sound; what was it, where had it came from but then he realised it was the ladder he rushed up to the top but he was too late.

Check Out This Great Analysis DLO

Last week in Te Ngahere we did an ‘Analysis DLO’. We had to choose 3/6 texts, our options were: The Mouse, The Ship, The Man, Paper Planes, Winter Kingdom, and Bilbo Baggins but one of our texts had to be The Ship. I chose: The Mouse, The Ship and Bilbo Baggins. There were 3 sections for each text; the first section was that you had to find phrases/verbs/adverbs/vivid adjectives; the second was figurative language so any similes/metaphor/personification; the third one was a figurative device. At the end of every section it asked you ‘what mood or atmosphere did this create?’  The hardest part about this was trying to fix what was wrong without knowing what I had done wrong!  During this I learned what a concrete noun is; it's is something that you can either: see, touch, hear, smell or taste.

Do you do anything like this in your class?

Check Out This Great Jumbled Text

Yesterday in Te Ngahere we had to solve a muddled up text  about ‘Friends’. We were learning to identify and use the correct structure and language features of explain writing.  When I say muddled up I mean muddled up; the title was in the middle of the text, a whole paragraph was on top of the planning and it didn’t even make sense put together! Once I thought I had got it right and was confident I marked it red but it got marked orange (Of course it did). So I rearranged them and marked it yellow but it got marked orange again, I rearranged them one last time and it finally got marked green. It turns out the first few were in the correct places, it was just the last ones, which made it really hard for me.

Have you ever had to solve a muddled text before?

Check Out This Amazing Te Reo Maori!

For the past few weeks in Te Ngahere we have been working on a weather report in Te Reo Maori. I did a blog post about learning weather in Te Reo Maori  afew weeks ago. Now Mahana and I have finally moved on to our DLO, we had a choice to make our DLO into a powtoon, animation or green screen; Mahana an I chose to do an animation. It didn’t matter what we had chosen, but it had to have a map of New Zealand  with all of the locations written in Te Reo Maori. Once we had finally finished making our animation we did a screencastify, linked it to the ‘Hand In Sheet’ and marked it red and now it’s green!

Have you ever had to do a screencastify in Te Reo Maori?

Cricket, I'm loving It

This morning half of Te Ngahere went out to the field to practise  cricket with someone named Neal whilst the other half stayed inside to do Te Reo; I was in the first group to go out. Once we got out there we sat on the side of the year three playground. Then Neal taught us the basic cricket skills; how to hold a bat and how to hit a ball, then we had to pair up with someone; I was with Imogen. Next we had to pick a number out of one and two (In our pairs) Imogen chose number one and I chose number two. Number one was the person who had to hit the ball to their pair and number two was the one who had to retrieve the ball. We practised that for about ten minutes then moved on to ‘Speed Cricket’, then we had to get into our pairs again and pick a number out of one and two; Imogen chose one, and I chose two. Number two were the people batting and number ones were the fielders. Once it was my turn to bat I thought I would completely suck at it but turns out I’m not that bad (I hit the ball every time); we swapped over about six times before we had to go back to class. I actually really enjoyed cricket even though I thought I wouldn’t, I really hope that we can do it again some time this term. I’m  really happy because now I know how to properly hold a cricket bat and how to properly hit the ball. How to properly hold the bat: you have to make a V using your thumb and index finger and point the center of the V towards the middle of the bat.

Do you enjoy playing cricket?

Incredible Algebra

Two days ago  in Te Ngahere during math we were learning to show how simple number puzzles work by writing sets of instructions using  algebraic symbols. Whaea Chrissy taught us to turn letters into numbers, she said it doesn’t matter what the letter is because it will still mean the same thing. Example: N=5 if I had changed it to P=5 it would still mean the same thing. Then she told us to pick a number but don’t tell her;  I chose 7. The first thing she told us to do was write N=(Our Number) then we had to double it, plus 10, minus 6, plus 8, then half it. Then whatever your answer was equaled 6 more than your original number. We also did this with a whole bunch of different strategies which are shown in the picture below.  Overall  I found this math really enjoyable and interesting. One of the reasons I really enjoyed it was because we got to try lots of really interesting different strategies.

How I Spent The Last Few Days Of My Holidays

On Friday the 9th of October our Mum told us that we could both invite one friend to come over and do some really cool stuff! My first choice was my old friend Zara but unfortunately she was busy so instead I invited Kaitlin, my brother invited his friend Jamie! The first thing we did was grab our togs and go straight to the Kawakawa swimming pools; but we didn’t realize that Jamie didn't want to  get fully submerged under water so Kaitlin and I told him to not put his head under but he just sat on the side. After about one and a half  hours of swimming we decided to get out of the pool, we then drove to Kerikeri and got pizza for lunch; Kaitlin bought a pizza along with a cookie pizza which we ate about ⅔’s of, then I bought Kaitlin and I a Coke. While we were waiting for the pizzas Jamie went to New World and bought a raspberry tea and six of the same flavor lollipops. When he got back Kaitlin and I just looked at him and asked “Why?” he didn't answer. After we had eaten our food we went to the  skating rink. Once we got there we put our socks on and started skating (I was really bad because I hadn’t done it in like four years, but I got better!) Then I bought Kaitlin and I a lemonade. Then we got into the car and finished the cookie pizza! Once we got home Mum said that Jamie could stay the night so obviously I asked if Kaitlin could stay the night, she said yes! So we made all of the beds; Ricardo slept on his bed, I slept on my bed; Jamie slept on a mattress in Ricardos room and Kaitlin slept on the couch. After that Ricardo stayed for a playdate at Jamie's house  which turned into a sleepover. Overall I really, really enjoyed the holidays!

What did you do during the holidays?

All Nighter Attempt With Zara

During the first week of the school holidays Zara and I were texting and discussed a sleepover, we then asked our parents and planned out the whole thing over Facetime. She was going to bring the: Cheetos, KitKats and Sour lollies; I was going to bring the Popcorn, Maltesers and Oreos. Once we had picked her up we went straight to the Kawakawa swimming pools, got changed and went for a two hour swim. Once we got out of the pool we got dressed, went home and set up our snacks for the movie. We were going to do an all nighter and stay up 30 hours + to watch a series called ‘Zoo’ but three  episodes in and Zara  decided that she didn’t like it; so we were looking for a movie to watch for about 15 minutes. Finally we found a movie I wasn't that keen on watching but we still did; we watched ‘Killer Queens’ (AKA The Babysitter P2). My opinion on the movie was that when the person died there was way too much blood ( more than the human body holds); it was kind of funny though! After that it was about 6:00 pm so we went for a walk up our road. Then we watched some Youtube but dinner was ready, we had fried rice. After we had dinner we stayed up until about 12:45 watching Youtube in my room because we put a TV at the end of my bed! The next morning we woke up with Oreos and Cheetos everywhere so we cleaned it up  and watched more Youtube for about an  hour, while eating leftover Maltesers and Popcorn. Altogether we stayed up about 20 hours!

Have you ever tried to pull an all nighter before?

Our Experience With The Wonder Project & Our Launches!

For the past nine weeks in Te Ngahere we have been learning, making, launching and modifying bottle rockets.

Our design process:

First we had to get all of our materials then we started building our bottle rockets, the first thing we did was cut one of the bottles from the top of the label then glued it on to the bottom of the other bottle. After a while we figured out that we were not meant to glue it on, we were meant to tape it on so we could untape it when the parachute goes in. After that we cut out our fins and glued them on, we then did our stability test and launched our bottle rocket.

We have now launched our bottle rocket five or six times. Our most recent launch was our best, it went 28.14 meters!  The best rocket that has been launched went 79.4 meters, can you believe that! We also made a parachute but ours sadly didn’t open when we launched our rocket  because it was to tight.

The hardest part about this was taking off the bottle lid after we realised we weren’t meant to glue it on. The easiest part about this was pulling the lever when it was time to launch.

Have you ever made a bottle rocket before?

Check out This Great Mahi Toi

This week in Te Ngahere we started some art called Mahi Toi. We stated by tracing over four intricate designs (all the same) on a practice sheet, I did two in pencil and two in vivid. I have just started to practice blending on one of my practices which is looking really good so far! The teachers told us a blending tip; you start dark then go light but what they said to make it dark was to color it in lightly over and over so you don’t get stripes! Once we are confident blending and tracing we can start a real copy on an A4 piece of paper. My favorite part about doing this art is the blending because there are so many different shade of one color. The hard part about this was making sure my lines were not bumpy; they had to be smooth.  Here is an image of my practise sheet.

What kind of art does your class do?

Weather In Te Reo Maori

This week in Te Ngahere we have been learning more Te Reo Maori, we are learning to understand and use familiar words about the weather. We started by reading a book about the weather in Te Reo, then we learnt what some weather conditions are in Te Reo Maori, such as: cloudy, rainy, sunny, etc After we had memorised the weather conditions we played memory with them (Which turned out to be really fun). Then we played go fish but we had to ask for what card we wanted speaking in Te Reo and if we wanted to go off subject we would have to do it in Te Reo. since we are still doing this when we are done ,we are going to make a weather forecast  in Te Reo Maori and present it to the class. I really enjoy learning the weather in Te Reo.

Can you speak Fluent Te Reo Maori?

PE Drills, I'm Loving It!

Yesterday in Te Ngahere we went out to the field to do some PE (Physical Education) drills for

Ki O'Rahi. We started off by playing a small game; I really enjoyed playing it because it wasn’t the type of game where two people have the ball the whole time and don’t share, Everyone got a turn. What I found hard about this was figuring out where to go to next because I went from the line, to the back, to the person you threw the ball to. After that we played a short game of rippa rugby; this time basically two people had the ball Nearly the whole time and it wasn’t very fair on the rest of the team!

Do you know how to play Ki O’ Rahi?

Some T-Shaped I Absolutely LOVE

For Panui (Reading) in Te Ngahere we do T-Shaped. We did this one to help us find show and not tell in a text.  The first thing we had to do was read the texts and answer some questions that we have to find show not tell for. After we had written all of our answers there was one last question at the bottom asking: which text created the most powerful images and feelings, explain why. The hard part about this was the last part because at the start I didn’t really understand what to do. The text I found the easiest was The Battle because it had an equal amount of both show and tell, it also had great vocabulary compared to the other two texts.

What does your class do for reading?

Math DLO that will blow your mind!

For the past few weeks in Te Ngahere we have been learning to do equivalent  fractions. We had to solve a sheet called fraction frenzy, I found these questions really fun to do but some of them were quite challenging. After we had solved the sheet we had to redo the first two questions on a piece of paper in a pair or group, I chose to be in a pair with my friend, Fern. We started by cutting out all of the fractions and glueing them in the correct places on an A3 paper. After that we could either make a math DLO together and screencastify it individually OR we could make it separately and screencastify it individually. I chose to do it by myself and screencastify by myself. We were doing this to share our learning and show that we actually know how to do the math.

Check Out This Great Te Reo Maori Work

For the past few weeks in Te Ngahere we have been Learning Te Reo Maori. We started by reading a book in Maori multiple times, then we wrote some sentences of kids going out to a sports field and playing games. Everyone's first sentence had to say I tēnei rā, I haere ngā tamariki ki te papa takaro, which means today the children went to the sports field. After we had done that we had to write: I ako rātou ki te mahi _____ , which means the kids learnt how to play, & then you’d add the sport you chose in Maori. Example: Say you chose rugby league, your sentence would be: I ako rātou ki te mahi Riki, which means: the children learnt how to play rugby league. We had to do at LEAST 5 of these, then our slideshow ended with KA MAU TE WEHI, which means awesome. After that Grace and I made a screencastify.  What I found hard about this was finding the correct translation for the words. What I found easy about this was doing the screencastify.

Can you speak any Te Reo Maori?

Check Out This Amazing Movie Making

For the past few weeks in Te Ngahere we have been making movies, we are doing this to show at the film festival. We started off by doing all of our planning, then we moved onto our script. When we started  writing our script, it started off pretty well but halfway through it was going absolutely nowhere so we decided to start from scratch, which turned out to be an amazing idea. Our movie is now about us going to a different dimension and we have to try and get out but we are calling it ‘Back to the future, BUDGET VERSION’ we go outside and get sucked into another dimension and have to find our way out by solving a series of questions! I found this easy because I have already watched back to the future and I found it hard when writing the types of shots for each scene.  Have you ever made a movie before?

Mosaic Art

Most of last week and this week in Te Ngahere we have been doing some digital mosaic art. Mosaic art is a type of art which is just lots of little pieces of paper stuck on another piece of paper slightly spread apart. Since we are doing this digitally we made a google drawing, chose a nice background color, got a picture of an animal or idol and pasted it onto the google drawing. You have to make sure you are able to use the image though, I chose a tiger.  After we have done that we use the polyline or shape tool to make a whole bunch of shapes on the picture, we then   colored the shape the same color as the picture and make the border color of the shape transparent then continue that until you have filled up all of the picture. I have already finished my first one  so I moved onto a second one, for that one I chose a snow leopard and I have now finished that one.  I really enjoyed doing this because it is just so fun to do in your spare time. Here are mine

Movie Making

Yesterday in Te Ngahere we started movie making. First we had
to get into groups, in my group was Grace, Gail, Imogen and I.
Then we had to read this brief about movie making, which
included 1. Planning 2. Film Type 3. Content 4. Script/Props 5.
Locaition 6. Sound 7. Title and credits, there was an 8th one
but we weren't really focusing on that. Each word had a small
paragraph underneath it explaining what to do. After we had
done that we had to make a google slideshow in our groups we
had made earlier, then we made a slide for each subject for our
movie, so far we have completed our planning, film type,
content, props, location and sound. We only have a few more to
do then we can get all of our props together and start filming
our movie. I did this last year in a different group and we made
a leprechaun movie. Have you made a movie before?
Here are some types of shots:
Extreme Close up

Medium Close up

Long Shot
Wide shot (Establishing Shot)

Fitness Rotation

Yesterday In Te Ngahere we went outside to the field to do some fitness, we are
doing this to practise for cross country.  First we split the class in half, half of us
went out to the field with Whaea Shanna to do fitness and the other half stayed in
with Whaea Lynne, I was in the first half. Once we got out there were 5 stations,
each of us had to go to one station and make a group of 5 or more. After that she
named the stations and we were going to do a rotation, each station had an
exercise. The exercises were ski-jumps, sit-ups, 10 high-knees and 2 press-ups,
crab walks and squat jumps. We had to do each exercise for 30 seconds and do
the rotation twice. The station we started on was ski jumps, which was actually
pretty tiring, then we moved onto squat jumps  which made all of our legs super
tired. After that we moved onto crab walks, this one was very interesting because
we had to get on our hands and feet with our belly in the air, then we slowly
walked over to  the sit up station, these were probably the easiest one to do out of
all the stations. Then we did the 10 high knees and 2 press ups, after that we did
the ski jumps one last time, then re-did the entire rotation one more time. After we
had done the fitness rotation twice we were going to do cross country practise but
we didn’t because most of the field was wet so instead we ran back and forth to a
cone for 5 minutes straight with music but we weren't allowed to walk. Then we
were about to play some PE but we didn't have enough time so instead we sat
down listening to music but Imogen and I did some gymnastics. I really enjoyed
doing this because even though we couldn’t do cross country practise we still did
exercise so when we do cross country we don't fall over within the first 2 minutes.
Have you started cross country practise yet?
