Math DLO

In Te Ngahere we have been learning how to double & halve. We had to make a math DLO, first we had to write how many slides we were going to make & give specific information about what was going to be on each slide. Then we had get it checked by someone & show a teacher.

Next we had to create a new slide & start, on the first slide I made a title page, on the second slide I did what we were learning & why, on the 3rd slide I had shown how it works, on the 4th slide I did why would I use this strategy & why it works & on the 5th slide I had to show some examples.

The strategy

Doubling & halving is simplifying a big multiplication problem like 6 x 14 is the same as 12 x 7, you would usually halve the bigger number & double the smaller number but if you can’t halve the bigger number it can sometimes be easier to double it - E.G - 13 x 4 would be the same as 26 x 2.

I enjoyed making the DLO because I kept making mistakes & then I can learn from the mistakes. Next time I could try to read it out loud a bit more to check if it makes sense.

Learning about our Identidy

On Monday the 18th, Whaea Monika & Whaea Kerry came to our school into the Whare, to talk to the Te Ngahere year sixes about learning about our identity. At the Whare, we were using Tinkercad & Paint 3D to make a Ngahere in virtual reality. First we went into our pairs & went on Tinkercad & we had to design & create our own tree, because scribble was not working we had to use the shapes. All together my working buddy & I made 3 trees which took quite long. After we had made our trees we went onto Paint 3D & made some Kiwi to go into the Ngahere, because we couldn’t get a Kiwi beak we got a bird face & put it behind the Kiwi so only the beak shows. After that the bell was going to ring very shortly, so we had to show Whaea Monika our work & she saved it for us. When we came back in we looked at what Whaea Kerry was making in Virtual reality. Next we went onto Sculpt GL & drew & designed something that shows our identity.

I really enjoyed making the 3D trees because we could make what we wanted & we didn’t have to all make the same tree,

I think I could help my learning buddy a bit more next time because he was having a bit of trouble making everything.

Going to Waitangi

On Thursday Friday the Te Ngahere year 6’s went to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds for the day. On the first day the bus arrived 40 minutes late, so we didn’t get as much time to do everything. First we had a little talk about what we were going to do after that we had lunch, then we had a play around with everything, We split in half, one half of us had a tutu & play around with heaps of cool stuff, while the other half went outside & took heaps of photos of the museum, native trees & birds, using Smart-phones. The first thing I did was have a play around with heaps of cool things, we went on heaps of apps, like Sculpt GL, Paint 3D, Tinkercad, VR, Green screen, Stop motion & coding robots. Next we swapped over & we got to go & see the museum & take lots of amazing photos. We took photos of things like the Treaty of Waitangi & the iron chestplate that they used in the war in the 1840’s, that the british started. Next we went outside & took photos of heaps of native trees & birds. After that we went back inside and had a little talk about what we were going to do the next day, then the bus arrived so we went back to school. The next day started off about the same, except we were combining all of the apps into virtual reality. After that we ate our morning-tea & then we made ourselves in paint 3D, that took a long time, so then we had lunch. After that the bus came & we went back to school after we said goodbye. I enjoyed going to Waitangi because we did heaps of cool stuff, I can’t wait until we go again.

Water safety

A few weeks ago Te Maunga had water safety. In water safety we learnt loads of things like never swim alone, check the weather & put your safety first. The 1 reason you should check the weather is because it could be bad & you could get sick or hurt. Also you should not expect a teenager to look after you so if you’re going to bring a teenager with you make sure there is an adult too. You should always tell the coast guard where you are going & when you are coming back, because if you are not back in time they will know something is wrong.

Cricket

Every Tuesday Te Maunga plays Cricket. In Cricket we learnt how to bat, catch & throw the ball properly, when we did do Cricket we played Speed Cricket & we got in pairs & played. I enjoy being a batter more than a fielder. What I found tricky was trying not to hit over the thing that the ball sits on because when you hit the ball you end up hitting it, the most easy thing was being a fielder because when you are a batter you sometimes miss the ball.

Rebecca Brothers

At Paihia School Rebecca Brothers visited to tell us about her Olympian Journey. Before she came to our school we had to get in pairs & write down 10 questions that we wanted to ask her (We didn’t have to ask her all of them). After we had written down all the questions we were allowed to add some related pictures. A few days later she came to our school & told us all about it. I learnt that you can do anything if you try hard.

Procedural text

In Te Maunga we have been doing Procedural writing about Beeswax wraps, Bird balls & Pikelets. Before we did the Procedure we had to experience it first, the one that I mostly enjoyed doing was making the Pikelets, I enjoyed making the pikelets because we all got a turn at doing something & we got to pour it into the pan, at the end we got to eat them. I also had fun doing the beeswax wraps because we could draw whatever we wanted on the fabric & it only take 30 seconds or less to dry & now I can wrap up my food without using Glad wrap, but the smell was very strong
